The
Man from Mars
Here is a fun, challenging
game to help you define a product or service. It's called "The Man
From Mars" and it's designed to stimulate creative thinking.
All too many times we try to identify one thing by using descriptions
that make comparisons to other things. As an example: Many people say
Rattlesnake meat tastes 'like chicken.' Only, the man from Mars doesn't
know what chicken tastes like. You would be forced to use DIRECT descriptions
that are understandable to the LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR. For instance
"sweet and juicy" would be a better answer.
When forging ahead with a new product or service another common mistake
is to think in terms of what the identity is not. For example: "Bob's
Chevy isn't the biggest dealer in town and we don't have the highest prices,
either!" The man from Mars doesn't know about the other dealerships
or what the other prices are and you don't want your audience to start
thinking about other dealers. A better description might be: "At
Bob's Chevy we have the lowest prices on the highest quality cars in town."
Keep refining your definition until it is so direct that even a 'man from
Mars' would know what you are describing.
